CSUN team joins 20 institutions in hands-on investing opportunity
D.A. Davidson & Co. has announced the addition of California State University, Northridge to its Student Investment Program, providing a unique opportunity for university finance students to gain a real-life education in portfolio management and investing.
“We are pleased to welcome CSUN as the first California institution in our program,” said James Ragan, Director of Wealth Management Research and co-head of the program. “We know that this program’s hands-on experience is invaluable for the aspiring financial professionals who participate and we’re delighted to help bring such a strong educational benefit to Southern California.”
CSUN joins 20 other colleges and universities across the West and Midwest in the program, which provides $50,000 to each school to invest in the stock market. Each team makes investment decisions with the guidance of a D.A. Davidson financial advisor and manages the portfolio for one year. The program is designed to provide a realistic experience in finance, stock research, portfolio management and investment topics to students teams from senior-level investment courses.
Top-performing teams in the program have an opportunity to receive a check for their college, earning half of any portfolio gains above 5 percent. D.A. Davidson absorbs any losses. In the 24 years since D.A. Davidson began sharing program profits, the company has donated $623,722 in profits to participating institutions. For the 2017-2018 program recently ended, 18 of the 20 participating teams earned checks.
D.A. Davidson launched its Student Investment Program in 1985 at Montana State University and has gradually expanded it since that time. CSUN’s participation, effective Oct. 1, will be part of the curriculum of the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics.
