Get to know Mark Davis, Senior Vice President, Director of Private Trust Development
Helping others first is the heart and soul of Mark’s work in private trust. He reflects on the benefits of establishing a trust, while sharing his own life experiences.
1. How would you describe your job/role to someone outside of our industry?
As corporate trustee, we take care of investments and other assets for the benefit of both beneficiaries and future trust recipients. When a loved one or corporation establishes a trust, we are the trusted partner to make sure that all wishes and provisions are upheld.
2. What is your advice to someone who is unsure if they need a trust as part of their estate plan?
Establishing a trust is especially important when a client would like to have legal protection of their assets. A trust allows you to provide benefits for the beneficiary (person receiving the funds or assets) that are targeted to providing for their support, health, maintenance and education. For various reasons, such as with a minor child or beneficiary with a disability, this approach often makes more sense than simply giving the beneficiary a one-time gift.
3. What are some of the most unique services that a D.A. Davidson Trust Company can provide for a client?
We take a holistic approach towards trust management. In addition to traditional asset management, we accept unique assets such as real estate, collectibles and mineral interests. Our Family Management Services offerings round out our broad asset management with solutions for bill pay, estate settlement and special needs trusts.
4. You are a co-founder of the Seattle Philanthropic Advisors Network; can you tell us about this organization and its mission in the Seattle area?
The Network was founded 10 years ago to help advisors be more impactful for their clients with charitable intent. We do this in conversation with notable philanthropists to learn how they work with advisors, family members and board members to decide which charitable organizations they choose to support. The organization has grown to be a terrific success and support network.
5. What book is currently on your nightstand?
“The Tao of Charlie Munger: A Compilation of Quotes from Berkshire Hathaway’s Vice Chairman, on Life, Business, and the Pursuit of Wealth.”
6. Which living person do you most admire?
John W. Stanton, majority owner and CEO of the Seattle Mariners, Chairman of Trilogy International Partners and a widely-respected businessman. John and I grew up together and he was my first Angel Investor in a previous company I owned. I am very grateful for his support during that time.
7. What is your idea of perfect happiness?
First chair on the ski lift on a bluebird day at Alta, Utah with 20+ overnight inches of 15 degree champagne powder.
