Our History

  • 1935-1941

    David Adams Davidson opens branch of E.J. Gibson in Great Falls, MT. In 1941 Davidson buys majority stock of E.J. Gibson and moves headquarters to Great Falls.

  • 1958-1959

    D.A. Davidson’s son, Ian B. Davidson, joins as third Gibson employee. Gibson Associates is renamed D.A. Davidson & Co.

  • 1975

    D.A. Davidson & Co. buys Financial Aims Corporation, a financial planning firm.

  • 1986

    D.A. Davidson continues growing and acquires a trust firm, later naming it Davidson Trust Co.

  • 1998

    D.A. Davidson acquires Jensen Securities, specializing in equity research and institutional sales.

  • 2002-2004

    D.A. Davidson expands into Denver, Colorado with a capital markets office. Now capital markets spans coast to coast.

  • 2005

    D.A. Davidson celebrates 70th year in business and buys assets of the Kirkpatrick Pettis companies, specializing in fixed income services.

  • 2009

    D.A. Davidson acquires Ruan Securities, a fixed income firm in Des Moines, Iowa.

  • 2012

    D.A. Davidson acquires McGladrey Capital Markets, adding offices in Costa Mesa and Chicago, and acquires SeaCap Investment Advisors based in Seattle.

  • 2013

    D.A. Davidson & Co. merges with Crowell, Weedon & Co., a full-service brokerage with offices spanning Southern California.

  • 2016

    D.A. Davidson acquires SMITH HAYES, expanding the firm’s presence in Nebraska. Our new mark, the bison, pays tribute to D.A. Davidson’s past while the sunburst represents promise of the future.

  • 2017

    Company launches D.A. Davidson Day, an annual company-wide day of community volunteer work.

  • 2019

    D.A. Davidson acquires Wells Nelson & Associates, a public finance and wealth management firm with offices in Oklahoma and Texas.

  • 2021

    D.A. Davidson acquires Marlin & Associates, an investment bank serving clients and investors across the financial technology and data & analytics industries. The combination creates one of the most active technology middle-market investment banking groups in the U.S.

  • 2023

    D.A. Davidson acquires Caprin Asset Management, a Richmond, Virginia-based registered investment advisor specializing in fixed income portfolio management.
